A Personal Statement
“Painting and drawing have always captivated me but I was convinced that the pursuit of these art forms would not produce a reliable job and so I took the ”long and winding road” to becoming an artist. After a career that began in the Probation Service I continued to work in the social care and community justice field whilst developing my skills as an amateur artist. In the early 1990s I took up painting through the Open College of the Arts and as a consequence I began more formal training that culminated in gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Fine Art in 2005. This journey has reinforced my belief that it's never to late to start to follow your dreams.

"I now paint to exhibit and also run visual art workshops for schools. I am interested in exploring the role of visual art in engaging with excluded groups such as young and adult offenders.“

About Nikki’s Work
The starting point for Nikki’s work is the commonplace, and often overlooked, the discarded, the industrial and “un-aesthetic”. Her challenge is to integrate these elements into a cohesive whole. She is interested in the properties of the materials that she incorporates and the associations they evoke. Nikki’s appreciation of texture is evident in her work in which she also incorporates found objects, particularly from the everyday domestic realm, with paint and collage. Nikki's choice of materials is based on practical considerations (they are cheap and readily available) but by recycling and re-using, there is also an inherent challenge to the “ throwaway”, consumerist society.
