Visual Art Workshops
for Schools: Banners & Hangings
Workshops that focus on producing banners
and hangings are suitable for a range of age groups. They are also great
if a school or organisation is looking to produce a piece of collective
artwork for display. The approach usually taken is one where participants
work on small sections that are then composed into a group banner. There
are different techniques that can be used. Fig 1 shows a window hanging,
which uses transparent materials to allow light through. The subject matter
in this case was sea-life.
Fig 2 is a section of a large banner, which was the result of the work
of a complete class. The subject for the images was geometric shape.
Although the workshop time can be as little as two hours, it is worth
bearing in mind that to produce a finished banner there is additional
time required to arrange, fix and hang the component sections, which can
be provided by the artist.
